    admin
    19 Feb 2012 | 12:06 pm
Happy Valley was the site for the battle between the 2nd and 3rd ranked teams.  Penn State (347.80) prevailed over the Illini (346.50) in a closely fought match-up.  The 2nd-ranked host Nittany Lions kept up their impressive streak of consistency, winning four team titles on FX, PH, SR and VT.  Once again, Scott Rosenthal conquered SR (15.60), and freshman Craig Hernandez won his second title on PH (15.00).  For the Illini, Paul Ruggeri won event titles on FX (15.60), VT (15.20) and PB (15.30), while freshman CJ Maestas took the HB title (15.40).  Maestas also finished a close 2nd on SR…

In a big tri-meet in Berkeley, top-ranked Oklahoma (351.60) over host Cal (349.40) and Stanford (343.70).  Good enough to keep their top ranking, the Sooners romped on FX and SR, which was enough to win out.  Cal captured event team titles on the other four apparatus, but it wasn’t quite enough.  OU’s Jake Dalton was tops on FX (15.60) and placed 2nd in the AA (86.70).  Sooner freshman Dylan Akers made his debut in the AA, placing 4th (85.00).  It was FX and SR where the Sooners did the most damage, taking the top four positions on FX (59.50), and four out of the top five…

Time for our annual list of six-footers listed on the rosters of NCAA men’s gymnastics teams.  While probably an incomplete list, due to the lack of vital statistics provided by various teams, this year’s group is the largest so far (16) since we started tracking this four years ago.  Air Force’s Jared Tomaszewski and Washington’s Greg Steward both measure in at 6’3″, making them the tallest gymnasts in the collegiate ranks.  Both of these guys would still be only be tall enough to play the point or the shooting guard positions on their schools’…

  • Catalina Ponor: “Who said I would retire after the Olympics?”

    25 Jan 2012 | 3:33 am
From CovasnaMedia: Catalina Ponor, the 2004 Athens Olympic Champion, gives us a lesson of will and strength in everything she does. At an age when many gymnasts are giving up the sport, Catalina, 24, decided to come out of retirement and reconfirm her position in elite gymnastics. After a 4 year break, a coaching experience in the US and having taken in the possibility of failure, the gymnast is now part of the Romanian Olympic team, preparing for London. - Every story starts with “once upon a time”. If you had the possibility to choose, how would you like to start the Catalina…

She is Sandra Izbasa, 22 in June, who has been in gymnastics for 18 years now and still finds motivation to keep going. (Sandra Izbasa @ 2011 Europeans -(c) Aurelia) - Sandra, are you healthy now?

I retired from gymnastics. Prosport: Why did you make this decision? Ana: I had my reasons and I would like not to speak about them. But I reached one point where I felt I couldn’t do it anymore. There were many injuries, I was feeling tired. And after the last elbow injury from December I realized I can’t do it anymore. Prosport: There was no info about the elbow injury… Ana: At the…

  • TIM TEBOW, TEBOWING AND TEBOW-MANIA

    12 Feb 2012 | 8:03 am
What do you think of TebowMania, Tebowing and Tebow Time? Now that the football season is over and this topic is no longer in the mainstream media we can look back on this in short term retrospect and make a call. When my gymnasts began Tebowing in the gym, I started putting a little more thought into the matter. My vote is that the Tebow phenomenon of the 2011 season was a good thing. Of course, this is based on the effect it had on my little piece of the world.      I believe one of the greatest lessons a coach can teach a child athlete is to…
  • DON'T STOP BELIEVIN'

    5 Dec 2011 | 1:00 pm
As coaches, parents and teachers it’s our hope and desire to be a positive influence on the children on our teams and in our classrooms and families. Typically, the rewards we receive for our efforts are consistent and evident. The children in our lives are happy and appreciative. But, how should we feel when these things aren’t so evident? What does it mean when our kids don’t seem to be appreciative or they become critical of us? Have we become bad parents or coaches? NO! Have we lost the ability to influence our athletes and children? NO! Although their appreciation may not always be…
  • MAKE EXCELLENCE REAL - Excuses

    26 Nov 2011 | 6:26 pm
In past writings, I’ve asked everyone to look for the positive in youth sports. The point being, there is much more positive than negative, although the negative tends to get more attention. I apologize in advance for not following my own advice in this particular post, but there is something that worries me and I haven’t found a way to discuss it without being critical and a bit negative. So, I’ll be quick with it. In a quest for perfect children, many parents, coaches, and teachers attribute a lack of competence to things outside the child's control, therefore maintaining the…
  • HOW DO WE PROTECT OUR CHILDREN?

    21 Nov 2011 | 3:30 pm
It appears that the children in our society are more in danger from predators than many of us would have believed prior to the last few weeks. News of alleged inappropriate behavior toward children from coaches in college football, gymnastics and college basketball brings to the forefront the age-old questions, how do we protect our children from people who want to do them harm? How do we allow our children to reap the benefits provided by all the wonderful adults involved in youth sports while protecting them from that small percent of one percent of coaches with immoral motives? First and…
  • A Little Fiction

    7 Nov 2011 | 8:50 am
I've always wanted to write a book, who hasn't.  After a couple years of kicking around several different ideas, I decided to actually do it.  It was fun developing characters and a plot.  Although the book is fiction,I was surprised how often, while writing, I thought of the people I've met and the experiences I've had in nearly forty years of gymnastics.  My original intent was a small little book that we could pass around the family.  Maybe my grandkids would read it some day.  When it was finished, I showed it to one of my…

The result, The Romanian Gymnastics Gala, although virtual at this point in time, is our tribute to all the gymnasts that work hard all year long and who are rarely celebrated thoroughly, especially in years like this. 12 Dec 2011 | 3:24 am
The most important event of the week for Romanians was the Italian Grand Prix held in Catania where Larisa Iordache and Catalina Ponor competed. There were various articles with results but nothing fancy: GSP, Prosport, Romgym .What concerns me is that they are mentioning Larisa Iordache had a small injury that kept her from competing for several months. Prosport goes as far as five months of break after a foot "intervention" for Larisa and small leg injury for Catalina. How come we didn't we know that?GSP: Nadia was awarded the key of the city of Acapulco at Mexican Open Gymnastics…

    22 Feb 2012 | 10:49 am
Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to judge the Spartan Open!  It was exciting for me for several reasons.  For one, this was a meet that I used to compete at when I was younger.  I think the last time I competed at that meet was when I was like 10 or 11.  I remember cranking for my high bar dismount and peeling right off…my dad (my coach then) was totally angry at me.  Luckily, that was just about the only bad memory I have of the meet.  Oh wait…I also remember messing up my floor pattern, and again, my dad was upset at me for that.  Other memories are a little more…

With the Japanese team in the gym last week, I’ve gotta say that it was extra motivating and fun during training!  It was especially nice to be able to get some feedback from my old coach, Mutsumi!  He’s an extremely technical coach and it’s always nice to get his perspective on how to execute different skills. After a week of training at Stanford, the Japanese guys joined in for a tri-meet against Cal and Stanford.  Although there were a few mistakes from each team, the Japanese team ended up taking the win!  Pretty impressive considering they only brought seven…

The elegant and stylish gymnast left the National Training centre to return to her home city, and she is starting normal high school. How time flies in life- but oh how it flies in gymnastics! Not for one second in this sport can you get complacent, can you rely on any kind of sure outcome.  And never, ever can you expect things to stay still- not even for a moment.Think back to 1980, when the reigning Olympic queen Comaneci- the girl who only four years ago had done things to a sport that no one ever imagined possible- was no longer even able to retain the crown.  Older, larger and less blithely confident, she could no longer be assured of a win as all the new young gymnasts- the pixies she helped create- rose around her.
